(September 3, 2021) The Back in the Swing Carol J. Fabian Leadership and Legacy Fund, honoring and supporting Dr. Carol Fabian’s pioneering work in breast cancer prevention and survivorship, is donating $25,000 to the Carol J. Fabian Professorship in Breast Cancer Prevention and Survivorship.
This new endowed professorship at The University of Kansas Cancer Center has been named to honor Carol Fabian, MD, founder of the cancer center’s Breast Cancer Prevention and Survivorship Research Center. At $4 million, it is the second-largest professorship to ever be established at KU Cancer Center and the fourth largest at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
“For decades now, Dr. Fabian has represented the best of the best at this institution. This professorship honors Dr. Fabian, who has served as a model for what our cancer center is truly capable of accomplishing,” said Roy Jensen, MD, cancer center director. “This professorship will allow her pioneering work to continue into the future.”
According to Back in the Swing Founder Barbara Unell, “Back in the Swing began this Tribute Fund in 2005 to celebrate Dr. Fabian’s remarkable leadership and legacy as our friend, colleague and physician, hundreds in our community have donated to this fund to support her work and to celebrate the thousands of patients and their families whose lives have been empowered and protected by her devoted care at KU Cancer Center. We forward to the Professorship recognizing Dr. Fabian’s pioneering work, and continuing her legacy of the best of the art and science of medicine for years to come.”
Back in the Swing is a grassroots, national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and protecting well-being after breast cancer by supporting education for consumers and healthcare providers; personalized, comprehensive, survivorship clinical healthcare; and academic medical research. When Back in the Swing began in 2000, no comprehensive, personalized, integrative medical services for breast cancer survivors existed. Beginning in January 2015, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) announced that a survivorship care plan and survivorship support are among the standards of care required for hospital cancer programs to receive accreditation.
